QoS is the favourite buzzword for different snake oil peddlers trying to sell a magical silver bullet solution. They shoot it at you from every possible angle until you are completely and utterly stunned and confused.
However, there is nothing particularly magical about it in a packet network. Each application in the network has a set of tolerances for three major network parameters: jitter, delay and packet loss.
QoS is the means through which the network tries to provide the application with conditions where the jitter, delay and packet loss are within its requirements.
